Extreme Temperature Diary- Saturday May 6th, 2023/Main Topic: Will Current Canadian Warmth Lead to Very Hot Times Across the U.S.? – Guy On Climate

Dear Diary. Over the last few days, a heat wave has developed across portions of Canada. We can see this from this morning’s 500 millibar analysis and from the Climate Reanalyzer:

This heat has had consequences. Wildfires have broken out across Alberta:

There also have been a lot of reports of heat records that have been broken across Canada:

So, will this Canadian heat lead to very hot weather across the United States? In the world of weather, many meteorologists have teasingly described Canada as the United States’ air conditioner. During winter if Canada has colder than average conditions, Arctic high pressure usually moves into the U.S. producing frigid weather. During summer, cool Canadian areas of high pressure sometimes roll into the U.S. breaking heat waves. If Canada isn’t chilly, having above average temperatures, usually the U.S. follows suit. We can see hints of this about a week out from today on models:

Before Saturday we could be seeing record temperatures from the Pacific Northwest eastward into the Midwest with above average warmth developing across portions of the South.

Of course, throughout this coming week I’ll be reporting on any anomalous heat that develops across North America and elsewhere across the planet.
