Trump doesn't "have to pay" anything.
As of now, he does.

A pending appeal doesn't absolve him of his legal liability.

Like I said before, $5M is but a small price to pay to make this case yesterday's news.

But given that Trump does Trump things, he is going to appeal anything, even if the judgement was for one dollar.
