tell me, what's the difference between a wintel workstation
and any other pc?

different cpu?
different bus?
different memory architecture?
multi-user?
crash-proof?

....or just a different label on the box?

i'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. of course wintel
workstations are outshipping unix boxes. a wintel
workstation is simply a pc, and pc's have been outshipping
unix boxes for as long as they've both existed.

sure, pc's are more capable than they used to be, but
so are unix boxes. they're used for *different*
tasks. this is where twister's "remember the mac"
mantra breaks down. the mac, for it's entire existence,
was competing head-to-head against pc's. sun boxes aren't.
neither are ibm as/400's, 3com palmpilots, or casio
wristwatches, none of which are in danger of extinction
either.

stop listening to the analsysts (who've never used sun
hardware and don't know what it's for). talk to engineers
at GM to find out what workstations are, and why they
use sun. talk to IS people at FedEx to find out what
servers are for and why they use sun. talk to secretaries
at GM, FedEx, or anywhere else to find out what pc's are
for. it's a whole different ballgame.

"Are you any good in math? Plot this trend out on a chart for ten years and tell me what happens to market shares? Or are you going to tell me that UNIX will reverse this landslide and start to take share from NT? Just like OS/2 and Netware did, right?"

Twist & Shout-

my daughter grew 14inches in the past 2 years. By the time she's 10 she'll' be taller than her mother or myself and when she's 15 she'' be almost as tall as my wife and I combined. Do the math!! Im going to be rich cause she' will score 100 points a game in the NBA.

How's this little article Feb 16/98 - new enough for you it's only Feb 14 now.

Throwing Windows off the desktop is too risky, but you can preserve some OS choice
infoworld.com
First, there's the Microsoft ad that implores you to install the Windows NT Workstation because it is faster, more robust, and yada yada yada. What will you be upgrading from? Windows 95, of course, which I guess must be slower and more fragile.

Who writes this ad copy? News flash to Microsoft: You're supposed to badmouth your competitors' products, not your own.

But NT is, of course, far inferior to many of its competitors, at least in performance and stability. Be honest. Isn't there a part of you that wishes you could use Linux instead? Too bad you can't take the risk.

---

You forgot to add into your calculations when the NC takes off you'll need performance and stability on the server side and as you can tell NT is Not There. Why would corporations upgrade from Windows to NT when all they need is a good powerful and reliable server and NC's for the employees ?
