I googled it, and can't find this "new recent news story". If you know what they're talking about, I'd love to see the link.

Here's my take on possible outcomes for the MXL-SIMO deal.

1.China approves the deal in June/July, and it closes before Aug 7th

2.Aug 7th comes, and MXL pays $160m, and SIMO and MXL announce a new deal at a reduced price (reduced more than $160m), with a year to close. SIMO shareholder need to vote. Chinese approval process continues without a break.

3.Aug 7th comes, MXL pays $160m, and SIMO and MXL announce a nine month extension of the same deal minus $160m. SIMO shareholders need to vote. Chinese approval process continues without a break.

4.Aug 7th comes, MXL pays $160m, and both companies go their separate ways.

For some reason I sort of think #3 is the most likely outcome. It really depends on whether MXL wants to pay $160m and walk away, or not.
