Sep 1, 2022An analysis of Gallup's 2021-2022 Work and Education surveys finds the following demographic differences in union membership among U.S. workers. More than one in three workers employed by the government (37%) belong to a union, versus 7% of all private sector employees.

A profile of union workers in state and local government

Union representation by state. State and local government unionization rates vary substantially by state, from a high of 73.1 percent in New York to a low of 10.1 percent in North Carolina (Figure E and Table 1).Despite the wide range of union representation rates, in 2017 union representation rates were higher in state and local government than in the private sector in every state.
