"NEC switches will plug Bay Networks sales gap"

Last updated: Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, 8:30 p.m.

Reports compiled from Mercury News staff writers and wire services.

Bay Networks Inc. said it will begin selling
high-speed switches made by NEC Corp. to fill a
gap in its line of computer-networking equipment.
Santa Clara-based Bay Networks, the No. 3
networking company, now doesn't have so-called
asynchronous transfer mode, or ATM, switches
fast enough or with enough connection ports to be
attractive to large corporate buyers. Competitors
like 3Com Corp. of Santa Clara and Cisco
Systems Inc. of San Jose make such switches.

The market for ATM switches, which let
companies carry data and voice traffic on the
same network, is expected to grow significantly
this year as more large corporations look to
ATM-based networks to cut telecommunication
costs.
