You're right HairBall,

The dog is in jeopardy, at the same time I don't like kids carrying guns.

And even with training not everyone is handy with a gun, my niece would be as likely to shoot herself as the culprit.

A really good dog doesn't need training to protect the owner.

The dog is on the front line line for injury from a gun or a knife which is why it should receive some training if it is being used for personal protection.
