I concede you have a good point for an individual. I indicated that I can see the benefit of your idea. I also see a benefit to looking at both sides of the issue. Please comment on the concern I raised about a "group of individuals". I consider SI very successful. It is my strong belief that it is the THREAD concept that makes it successful. I believe that the SI format (one post after the next)is what makes it successful. I believe the ignore function touches on that format and should be considered carefully.

Most people have indicated that they would not use the ignore function. I believe that to be the case. If it were to turn out that only a few threads would opt in concert then I can't see much harm on this issue except to the thread in question. What I see is a series of posts asking each other to ignore the "idiot". I don't want to read that either. I only raise what I believe to be a valid concern.

I rarely post to a thread unless I read or skim ALL of the recent posts. Many posters new to a thread indicate that they have not read all of the posts. Many others indicate that they have just read all of the 10000+/- posts and now want to join the group. I believe it is incumbent on other posters on a thread to read or skim at minimum the recent posts if they choose to post to a thread. For example we recently had a lively discussion on this topic not long ago on the thread from which this thread was spawned. Then out of nowhere the issue was brought up again. It seemed to me as if the "new" posters discussing the idea had not read the previous posts. (on a welcome thread with new posters to SI one would expect that) I also see the same thing happening on other threads. That puts resident posters in the position of having to repeat themselves. I don't mind but it adds to the overall length of a thread. For those of us who do not have cable modems (including me) repeat posts should be a concern.

If posters on a thread are ignoring posts and at the same time posting, the potential for repeat posts goes up.

IMHO
