GM,

Greetings! I was kind of hoping you would chime in. While relative location of the engineers involved may not be what I was alluding to I can see the advantage. But the big one, IMO, is concerted effort of the different disciplines involved. For example, if, from a media stand point, you can increase yield by 5 points with a slight relaxation in the single bit error specification, thus involving a change in the error correction approach by the drive designers, isn't it easier to do if you all report to the same P&L? This, in essence, illustrates my point. You can argue that concerted efforts are a product of supplier/manufacturer as well. But when the rubber meets the road does it really?

Another advantage is early cooperation on future design and enhancements.

There is a tremendous marriage of scientific disciplines in the design and manufacturer of disk drives. Unfortunately price and over capacity may have trivialized this understanding to a point we tend to overlook it.

Best,
Stitch
