The "look ahead" scenario seems to be the least objectionable alternative at this stage.

Positives:
1. Somewhat preserves thread continuity in that the user is still eyeballing the first line of the potentially skipped messages.

2. Will encourage some users to use the first line as a topic.

3. Does not place users in the position of rating other users.

4. Does not encourage groups to conspire to ignore other users via automated filtering.

Negatives:
1. Additional server overhead. Right now, the server has no practical overhead in determining the URL of the next message URL, since it simply adds 1 to the current record's ordinal sequence, and verifies that it is not the last post on the thread. In a look ahead scenario, it would have to read several records, store the pertinent data, and vary the format of the page to accommodate a variable number of next records.

2. If more variable data is sent out with each page, it will use more of the available bandwidth.

3. Page length. I like to see everything within the physical boundaries of an 800x600 resolution monitor. Adding additional navigation at the bottom of th message will create the need to scroll down more often, requiring much more repositioning of the mouse pointer. However, I could live with that if Brad would move the "View Subjectmarks" to the top of the page. (Hint!) This is important for Bellyroasters (people who surf in the backward leaning horizontal rest position with a laptop roasting their belly).

4. It will encourage some users to deliberately mislead on the first line.
