The thing about 'verifying purchasers' on Goodreads would be difficult because one does not have to buy a book from Amazon to read a book. Many other booksellers, as well as online sellers, and of course getting a book from the library. So they'd lose a lot of eyeballs if they tried to go that route. The main reason most people use Goodreads is to check out a book they are thinking about reading. Naturally they make it easy to buy the book through Amazon, but they'd be idiots to require it.
