I'm trying to find out if Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
is what I think it is. I have been putting pieces together trying to come up with an understanding of what is physically happening. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Currently in use colored light in fiber runs into problems with harmonics. Essential they only shoot three different colors down the fiber and they need to stay in order. Because the detecting equipment doesn't detect the color of the light just the expected order of it's arrival with only one color and plus at a time. Shoot to many colors down and due to the harmonics of the light waves the pulses of different colored light can arrive at the same time and be detected as a single pulse.

My question is who is working on a detection system that actual detects what frequence of light are present. Therefore allowing the spectrum of light to be divided up into separate channels.

If I'm not mistaken this is sort of like ADSL on copper.

I hope someone out there can make some sense out of what I wrote.
