I visited Central Java mainly near Semarang but did drive on to Surabaya in East Java. I saw a much larger police presence than in the near past and large numbers of shops in many smaller towns closed. Local friends observed several incidences that I would call something less than a full scale riot (1968 Democratic convention style)but sufficently scary to me and I've been around such situations before. The shut down of local commerce is what hit me. Goods and services are not flowing like in the past. People are battening down the hatches there.
