I believe this is wrong. As long as you stay within the buying power of a cash account, there should be no problem. And Datek enforces buying power limits so you can't really get into trouble - other than losing all your money if your positions go sour, of course.

Note that margin allows you to trade larger positions of marginable stocks - and possibly lose more.
