Ian; you're right, of course. I remembered seeing this some time ago (from the LRCX web site). How ever they measure I hope it's still true!! LAM RANKED WORLD'S LEADING ETCH SUPPLIER Lam Tops Dataquest and VLSI Lists FREMONT, California, May 12, 1997-Lam Research Corporation (Nasdaq: LRCX), a leading supplier of wafer processing equipment to the worldwide semiconductor and flat panel display industries, today announced that it has been named the world's top supplier of etch equipment by Dataquest and VLSI Research Inc. This achievement for the 1996 period marks the third time in four years that Lam has been chosen by the industry's premier market analysts as the leader in the etch equipment market. According to Dataquest, Lam commanded a 31.8 percent share of the market during the reporting period, nearly three percentage points more than its closest competitor. VLSI Research Inc. assigned Lam a 30 percent share of the 1996 market, about two points above its closest competitor. For the past three out of four years, Dataquest has named Lam the industry's leading etch supplier. Lam's unanimous recognition as the world's leading etch supplier closely follows other industry recognition the company has received in recent months, including a prestigious "Top 25 Technologies of the Year" award from Industry Week magazine for its leapfrog Continuum(TM) flat panel display etch system. According to George Canavan, Lam's vice president of marketing, the company's market dominance in the high density segment of the etch market was the key factor behind its continuous leadership. "More than two-thirds of Lam's etch revenues for the first three quarters of the company's current fiscal year were for high-density tools," he said. "A growing number of customers are transitioning to Lam's TCP(TM) series of high-density poly, oxide, and metal etchers to meet their current and next-generation production needs." Dataquest estimates that the compound annual growth rate for high-density etch applications from 1992 to 1996 is nearly 75 percent, making it the fastest-growing technology segment of the etch equipment market. Based on Dataquest numbers, Lam owns over half of the high-density metal etch market. G. Dan Hutcheson, VLSI Research's president, stated that Lam's leadership position is a direct result of their technological leadership. "This is not the first time that Lam has been named the industry leader," he said. "Lam has earned a reputation among customers for superior high-density etch technology, making them a perennial favorite."
