I used to go to seminars by a guy named Ian Woodward (High Growth Stocks) who used to discuss sector investing. His favorites were always the tech sectors, such as semiconductors, software, and so on, because they tended to stay in an uptrend for longer periods, usually 6 to 15 months at a time. Even if you catch them late, you can ride them for a long time. There are other sectors like that, such as business services, finance, oil & gas, etc.

He goes through the industry group rankings in IBD during the late stage of a correction or early stage of a bull market, and picking out stocks in the growth sectors making new highs. The rationale is the new highs list will expand during a bull market and these stocks in the growth sectors already in the news highs list will continue their rally.
