Jeff, <bashed Intel for overpricing chips. It is amusing to now read sudden criticism of "dumping" due to too low a price!>
What is really amusing is not to be amused about the
size of this chip (450mm2).
This fact apparently escaped your attention (due to
your over-amusement or your unfamiliarity with the
economics of silicon manufacturing).

<Or perhaps:
1. Intel has competitively dense gate array technology>

Perhaps they do, but the post I was responding to claimed a large die size ~450 sq mm and 50% wasted gates. If this is correct then it would make sense to convert to standard cell.

<2. The planned product lifetimes will be very short as
Intel evolves 3D to dramatically higher performance levels.
(The words Portola and Whitney cross my mind).>

I have not seen Intel confirm these projects exist, so who's to say how long the i740 will exist as a stand alone product. How about a shrink to .25u as more capacity comes on line? Are they pad constrained? I wouldn't expect Intel to leave anything on a gate array for long if there are 50% wasted gates and high volume.
