Looks like these are their future product plans. Exabyte Announces Mammoth Technology Roadmap; Mammoth Technology Roadmap Shows Performance Gains Unmatched in the Industry BOULDER, Colo., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corp. (Nasdaq: EXBT) today announced its Mammoth technology roadmap that clearly positions Mammoth as the drive technology of choice to meet the growing storage requirements for database and application server capacity and performance. "Mammoth's industrial deck design will enable Exabyte to develop future generation drives to meet customers' demand for a new level of reliability and performance," said Bill Marriner, president and CEO of Exabyte. "As the Mammoth roadmap clearly shows, Exabyte is planning performance gains unmatched by any competitive roadmap in the industry." "The Mammoth technology roadmap is one of the strongest we've seen in the midrange tape market," said Fara Yale, director and principal analyst at Dataquest. "Exabyte's confidence in its ability to deliver the products on its migration path is demonstrated by the company's willingness to present this roadmap to the public. This is an important step in regaining mind share and market share for the Mammoth technology." The next-generation Mammoth drive will deliver a native data transfer rate of 12MB/s and a native capacity of 70GB. This quadrupling of the data transfer rate is the keystone to Exabyte's product development strategy. By the year 2000, Exabyte's high-performance tape drives will again triple the native transfer rate to 20MB/s, and will increase native capacity to 200GB. "Third-party research and Exabyte's own end-user research point to reliability and performance as the top storage requirements in the application server market, followed by capacity," said Kelly Scharf, business line manager for Exabyte. "Since capacity constraints can easily be overcome through automation solutions, it makes sense to focus product development efforts on performance criteria." The next-generation Mammoth drives have several key enhancements that will contribute to the impressive performance gains. First and foremost, the drives will employ a multi-channel scanner. The current Mammoth product uses a two-channel/four-head scanner, while the next generation will employ a four- channel/eight-head scanner with PRML implementation. In addition, the new scanner will operate at increased RPMs. Other enabling technologies include narrower tracks, longer AME tape, 2.5:1 ALDC compression; improved heads, next-generation SCSI technologies and full backward read compatibility with previous Exabyte Mammoth drives. "The migration path for the Mammoth technology creates a family of solutions that map the full range of performance and capacity requirements for backup in the distributed network," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corporation. "Mammoth's outstanding price/performance and high customer satisfaction make it extremely competitive." Mammoth technology was designed with users' needs in mind. All future Mammoth technology-based drives will continue to support Mammoth's patented gentle tape handling features along with its unique LCD display, dynamic head cleaner, TapeAlert(TM) compliance and on-the-fly error correction. In addition, Exabyte is already working with the largest players in the backup software business to insure timely support for the next generation of Mammoth drives. Future generations of the Mammoth technology will incorporate additional improvements in the multi-channel/multi-head strategy in order to deliver the significant improvements in performance. The continued use of AME media is also fundamental in Exabyte's product development efforts. AME media's superior formulation provides many benefits in durability, reliability, power efficiency, incremental densities, and tape length. "The technological advances in these products are what you would expect from a company focused solely on data backup and storage," said Farouk Al-Nassar, vice president and general manager of Exabyte's tape drive division, "With Mammoth's aggressive and achievable roadmap, Exabyte is poised to be the market leader in data backup for application and database servers, the fastest growing segment of the server market."
