Since you think in terms of black-n-white, let me answer in black-n-white terms for you.

Lincoln thought they should have been left as slaves. Just because he was an "abolitionist at heart" doesn't mean anything, because the first years of his presidency was marked by compromise with slave-holding states.

To you, he should have never compromised. Instead, he should have immediately declared war on the slave-holding states, even before they formed the Confederacy.

Remember, it's either all or nothing. No nuance, no compromise, just put the fear of God into those slave-holders, because you are on the "right side of history."
