It would sure begin to look like a political curse hovered over the Gore family if the markets collapsed and thereby ruined his political career. His father ruined his career by offering reasoned objections to the Vietnam War. Somewhere I have a letter from Albert Gore, Sr., that says "It certainly does not appear that a military solution is the answer."

I think your reading of the Fed is exactly right. I think they were ready to try a gradual tightening and then backed away.

I have to admit that I do not understand anything about the operations of the International Monetary Fund except what I read in the papers and on these threads. To judge from the statements pro and con that come from politicians across the spectrum not many of them understand it either.

I think I will go look for some historical information on the IMF.
