Wharfie, I thought about the charging problem as I once again struggled to find working chargers at public parking lots.

Each of these chargers cost like, what, $10K? Plus whoever installs them has to tear up the asphalt and lay power lines.

And each charger is often occupied for a few hours at a time by vehicles.

Most of these are Level 2 chargers, of course. Getting Level 3 charging stations to be as ubiquitous as gas stations will be a HUGE challenge.

A mom-n-pop can open up a gas station, complete with other services like auto maintenance and smog check, for not much upfront cost. And such a station can refuel each vehicle in less than five minutes.

Even Level 3 charging stations will take at least 15 minutes, if not more, to charge up anything larger than my Toyota Pious*. That means we'll need more Level 3 charging stations than gas stations.

Of course, a large part of the charging problem is solved by the ability to charge at home. But for road trips, charge-at-home isn't an option.

*And no, a Pious can't be charged with a Level 3 charger
