Surgutneftegaz, an oil-company in Russia, is rumored to be a major player for a part of the AIPN
concession in Kazakhstan.
This 3rd largest oil co in Russia is looking to re-establish its presense in Kaz, as it had prior to the
breakup. Also, the
Russian govt is supportive as they hope to gain some of the lost natural resources back that they lost.
Also...the concession is
reported to contain at least 8 billion bbls (including Chickaduk & Bengash). My source, who is an
friend of a Surgutneftegaz manager,
says that the region is floating in oil (rivaled only by the middle east).. He says he knows because he
was there when the
Soviets did the earlier work. Also says Russians in the know heavily invested in AIPN.

We may get the first indication of a Russian/AIPN JV from one of the Russian news sources. (Certainly
not from MILL.)

If you can"t afford Interfax (at $1500/year, who can?) you can get a 1 month free trial. I've already used
up my free trial, maybe someone else can get it and relay any useful info to the rest of us.

Another source for FSU/CIS news is New Europe at
(www.new-europe.com). This is only $350 a year, but again you can try a 2-week trial which I just
started - I'll pass along any info I get in the next 2 weeks..

Another website (free) is:
weber.u.washington.edu/~atyrau/Pipeline
This one has 4 sections:
1.) Pipeline News Archive - see issues #67 and #70 for AIPN news. It is old, and much of it we've
seen in press releases, but there are a few tidbits there that we haven't seen before.
2.) E&P Archive - current news on JVs, drilling and seismic activities, etc., and a lot of politics.
3.) Oil & Gas - has connections for dozens of FSU/CIS websites.
4.) Oil and Gas Companies - hundreds of connections to websites of companies doing business in Kaz.
(No, AIPN is not listed).

This will give you something to do since the market's closed tomorrow.

Anyone else have any good Russian News sources?
