Ukraine needs the F-16s to replace its aging Soviet-origin MiG-29 and Sukhoi Su-27 jets.

They can avoid those short-range shoulder-fired Stinger-type gizmos by staying out of range and using stand-off weapons like gps-guided glide bombs and cruise missiles.

They also need air-to-air missiles with enough range to counter those pesky Russian KA-52 "Alligator" attack helicopters that are raising havoc with Ukraine's armored vehicles.
