[IMO, Dell is living on borrowed time]

Kevin: Isn't that too harsh a statement? May I ask what makes you think so? Is this just a gut-feeling or have you any facts to back up the claim? As far as I know Dell is growing faster than any other PC maker I know,I believe their growth rate is some 50% or so.

As for which company i would rather own, I do both and hope to see them both do well.

Kevin,

I look at DELL a little differently than you! I think of DELL as an 'assembler' of PC's! ( I don't know what they 'produce'? I think that use 'motherboards', power supplies, cases and install cards manufactured by others to 'build' the customers computer! ) By the sheer numbers of units sold they can keep their margins down and make up for it in volume! This is an ideal market for the 'home' or 'small business' platforms. By locating a 'specialist' on site (like at Boeing) Dell can capture some pretty large accounts, no question about that, and that could continue ( as you observed ) for sometime to come! This is OK!

Now, for CPQ! With the purchase of Tandem and DEC, CPQ 'spans' the market place from 'home' thru 'small business' into the medium-large arena. What I find of most interest is the Tandem purchase! Tandem markets that 'transparent' multi-computer, mirrored system. As the 'world' commits more and more to the computer vast amounts of data, I think that the industry will be more and more inclined to go to a system that will be able to keep the integrity of the data under adverse conditions! Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to watch the evolvement!

Thoughts?
