Doren,
Would you like NO regulations?
Nice straw man. Cool story, too.

Doesn't represent what I believe, but hey, whatever you want to say in order to defend California's overly stringent regulatory environment.

I don't know the details, as I'm not an expert on building codes and whatnot, but it's generally agreed that California has some of the most stringent regulations on building, zoning, and development.

Does that make houses any safer here than, say, in Texas or Florida? I don't know.

But does it contribute to the high cost of living, that developers have to jump through many more hoops than what is arguably necessary? Without a doubt.
DUH! Yes white collar selfishness. Put the problem in SOMEBODY ELSE's neighborhood... like the poor?
WTF are you talking about? NIMBYs don't give a Brandon about where the "problem" (whatever "problem" you're referring to) ends up. All they care about is protecting their own home values.

Selfish? Of course it is. Can you blame them?

No, the people I blame are those who LOVE the high-tech money that comes in but then bemoan the high living costs that result. These are the people who don't want to accept responsibility for accommodating the tech-fueled growth. They just want the benefits while blaming "white collar selfishness" for their own lack of responsibility.
My mom died from lung cancer... do you think that was enough to convince my brother to quit? Sheech.
Yes, I realize that curing an addict is extremely tough.

The problem is that we're creating more addicts and creating an environment that coddles addiction rather than discourages it.

Legalization, if done right, can free up resources from unwinnable "wars on drugs" to more productive measures like addiction treatment.

But the way Oregon did its legalization is just plain st00pid, and they're scrambling to try and reverse it.
