BEL-TRONICS Announces LMDS Equipment. February 16, 1998
Mississauga, Ontario - February 16 /PRNewswire/-- BEL-Tronics, a designer and manufacturer of high-volume, 10-40 GHz microwave radio devices, today announced a new transceiver designed for mass production at low cost. The Patented, small, low-powered, Broad-band Microwave Transceiver (BMX "TM") is specifically designed for use with LMDS (Local Multi-point Distribution Service) and its Canadian equivalent, LMCS. These services, pioneered by CellularVision, use microwave signals to transport high speed data, voice and video from a single point in a cell to multiple points in that cell. Consequently, a single wireless LMDS transmitter can cover an area with a radius of several miles at a fraction of the cost and effort needed to dig up streets and yards to bury wire, cable or fiber.
"The key to economically successful LMDS deployments is the equipment installed at the customer's location," said James Plante, Vice President of Wireless Development at BEL-Tronics. "A single hub transmitter can service thousands of customers. So if LMDS is popular, the costs that have to be closely monitored are those at the customers' sites. BMX "TM" is designed for low- cost mass-production, which is vital to thesuccessful acceptance of LMDS."
"BEL-Tronics is approaching this transceiver differently from most in the industry," said Glen Martinson, Executive Vice President of Engineering at BEL-Tronics. "We are a consumer electronics company with a great deal of expertise in low- cost, millimeter wave product design, at both 28 GHz and 38 GHz, as opposed to low volume, government contract millimeter design firms just entering consumer electronics. We already have the patents, knowledge and experience to provide low-cost, millimeter wave solutions. These differences flow into everything we do."
BEL-Tronics was recently acquired by the Akcess Pacific Group of San Diego, California, in a transaction that granted Akcess Pacific all rights to its engineering, technology, brands and patents. Akcess Pacific is a privately held group of companies that specialize in optimizing strategic operating and financial potential. BEL-Tronics will keep its corporate identity and will continue to develop and manufacture in its facility in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
BEL-Tronics is actively partnering with other systems integrators and equipment manufacturers to offer LMDS/LMCS operators a technologically and economically strong turn-key solution. BMX TM, the low-cost, two-way transceiver, is a critical part of that solution, but complete LMDS/LMCS system configurations vary based on the target applications.
"We are extremely excited about the possibilities presented by the FCC's upcoming LMDS auctions, and we will be working with potential operators and other integrators to optimize those possibilities for both operators and consumers," said Plante.
