"due to tensions over demands by some Canadian Sikhs for an independent homeland"

I don't see why that's a problem... Canada has lots of room... just give them a corner of Yukon, or Nunavut ?

That's news for me = Sikhs saying they want an independent homeland. I have no idea what that means. But such things can end up meaning quite a lot.

I think of Sikhs as just a brand of theological leanings like Anglican vs Protestant compared with Presbyterian or Catholic or Buddhist or Shinto or Bahai or .... I can't add Moslem because they assert their obligation to do head-hacking and world conquering at the point of a scimitar so they are indeed a geopolitical totalitarian ideology. Maybe some brands of Islam don't subscribe to head-hacking but I have no idea how many Korans there are and whether the deleted/varied/interpreted scripts are acceptable to the fatwah issuers of death and destruction.

I shall have a quick read and become a World Expert on Sikhs Seeking Nirvana. I suspect Nirvana isn't actually for Sikhs = maybe for Hindus or some other born again brand Rosicrucians? [No, Google says the Rosis are European]. Maybe it's Buddhists who have the born again idea - coming back as a lesser or better being. Sure enough, my memory is working ... Buddhists Sanskrit termnirvanais most commonly associated with Buddhism, in which it is the oldest and most common designationfor the goal of the Buddhist path. It is used to refer tothe extinction of desire, hatred, and ignorance and, ultimately, of sufferingand rebirth.

If I remember rightly Indira Gandhi or the original Gandhi were murdered by a Sikh - but maybe it was not a Sikh. A Hindu? A quick Google reminder and the answer is both. Indira by Sikhs for the temple conflict and old man Gandhi by a Hindu for some reason.

So there's some history and antagonism of some sort or other worth doing some murdering between Sikhs, Hindus and Moslems. Buddhists got a bad run once the Moslems got loose with their head-hacking ideology so something might be afoot. I think of Sikhs as good blokes and Hindus too. Buddhists as well. Moslems are problematic, prone to jihad and head-hacking at the drop of a hat. Not as bad as Americans though who are on a real rampage in recent decades, with kickback loot flowing by the giga$buck and the Rule by Making up Rules Rules-based PNAC rampant, threatening atomic bomb Armageddon if they don't get their world conquest.
