Stich- Does Malaysia have a significant migrant worker population? Would the migrant worker population (if any) be subject to deportation? (If I recall correctly, planned deportations were announced in Thailand) As the economic morass becomes more prevalent in day-to-day life, what level of reaction would you anticipate? Reaction ranging from placid acquiescence to riots etc.

I recall from your prior posts that various laws favor indiginous malay over ethnic chinese. Would you anticipate such laws being enforced more stringently? Would you anticipate ethnic unrest, analogous to that experienced by Indonesia?

Thanks for your response

Tony

Barry,

The only reference I have been able to find on Malaysia's population has it at 19.5 million or so but that s a two year old figure. I read a reference to the work population a few weeks ago that put the number at 9.2 million but that did not include foreign workers of which there are many. Maybe as many as a million in fact according to one article and I am not clear on who is losing the jobs. If its in construction or factory workers I will wager that foreign workers (mostly from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Burma, and Philippines) will be retrenched (and deported) first. The population of Kuala Lumpur is a little over one million souls. believe it or not the Prime Minister's Office' web page has a whole section on population that doesnt mention any numbers.

Best,
Stitch
