Japan mission urges quicks steps to help Indonesia

TOKYO, Feb 18 (Reuters) - A Japanese government mission to Indonesia returned on Wednesday urging quick compilation of measures by Japan to help Indonesia weather its financial crisis.

In a report compiled by Tadao Chino, former vice finance minister for international affairs, the mission said such assistance should include funding from the Export-Import Bank of Japan, trade insurance and aid for daily necessities such as food and medicine.

The Ministry of Finance-led mission, which included officials from the trade and foreign ministries, said in its report that President Suharto recognises the seriousness of problems facing his country such as private debt, trade financing, and shortages of daily necessities.

''We had the impression that he has a strong desire to solve these problems quickly by all necessary means.

''Also for this purpose, achieving currency stability is an urgent task, and he said he wants to receive advice from the G7 (Group of Seven industrial nations),'' the report said.

It also said Suharto places high priority on the stable supply to the Indonesian people of food, medicine and other necessities.
