Come on, Bay. Post your announcement...

Inter@ctive Week Online (February 12, 1998) - An official from Bay Networks Inc., responding to reports that the networking company was on the verge of signing a reseller agreement with a manufacturer of high-end network switches based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode technology, said Wednesday an announcement on the company's direction was imminent.

"The bottom line is that it's been known that we have been looking at core Asynchronous Transfer Mode technology," said Basil Alwan, director of product management for Bay's (BAY) switching product division, adding that Bay had considered at various times the options of developing its own technology, acquiring it through a purchase of another company or striking an agreement with an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) manufacturer.

Although Alwan would not comment on which direction Bay had decided to go, he said an announcement would be made soon. "You'll have to stay tuned," he said.

In the past week, various print and online stories have reported that Bay will announce a reseller deal next week with either Fore Systems Inc. or NEC Corp. Both companies make high-end ATM switches that are used to move data across corporate backbone networks at rates that can exceed 655 megabits per second. A core switch in Bay's arsenal would presumably compliment the company's Centillion switch family, which is designed for local area network environments.

Officials from Fore and NEC could not be reached.

Analysts said offering high-speed gear, such as ATM and Gigabit Ethernet equipment, is crucial to Bay and other networking companies that will need to supply its customer base with a clear upgrade path for building high-speed networking infrastructures.

The lead may be questionable. The real issue with things like the Bay deal is the fact that the saying "if you are not with me then you are against me" often times holds true. Bay is a big player. I would rather them have been selling our switches then us selling against them. Just my two cents.
