This is like saying, " I think it's harder these days to have powerful legs because the amount of distance we need to travel is exponentially greater than 100, 200, or 300-years ago."

This is only true because the long distances make us drive rather than use our legs. But nothing stops one from going on stairmaster or doing squats to have strong legs.
