RE: "Just how compatible with the NT that runs on Intel is the NT that runs on Alpha? "

They are different flavors of NT. There are probably over 4000 native applications for Alpha right now. All other applications are easily and automaticly 'translated' (not emulated) by DEC's lauded FX!32 software that will be included by MSFT in the next rev. of NT (and is free from DEC now). The native applications blaze... The translated applications run at about Intel speed.
With a nudge from CPQ, I bet there will be a larger number of applications for Alpha. Originally I was under the impression that it was relativly easy for a company to do 2 versions of an application, but I am not sure anymore. MSFT usually comes up with a quick version of Word and Excel, and lags with the other office applications.
