Just add a second head to each arm? Easy for you to say.

It's not done because the data heads are the single most expensive item in a hard drive. 1.6" drives with 10 disks will have 20 heads. It's better to improve performance other ways like increasing spin speed, or reducing seek times.

If this was true, an 8 head/4 plate 8.4G hard drive would be much faster than a 2 head/1 plate 2.1G drive. It isn't.
