I'll explain it to you, MiniGolfer67, and the rest of the thread, even though I think you are utterly incapable of understanding nuance.

When it comes to identity politics, checking off the boxes comes with political risks, even for a state where Democrats dominate. If the checkbox candidate turns out to be incompetent and/or corrupt, the Democrats will be using up political capital trying to cover up and distract from their mistake.

Case in point: Vice President Brenda.

But with Feinstein's replacement, she will only be serving for just the final year of a six-year term. Hence Newsom took the opportunity to check off the boxes without having to live up to any mistakes he made in the process.

Such as, of course, the fact that his appointee is a resident of Maryland, not California.
