Scalise drops out of speaker race
The Louisiana Republican had no clear path to the 217 votes he would need to take the House GOP's reins.

The House GOP’s pick for speaker, Steve Scalise, announced Thursday he will no longer seek the gavel as he confronted a likely insurmountable vote shortage.

While Scalise had won a majority of votes in an internal GOP ballot a day earlier, he faced an ever-growing list of Republicans who vowed to support only his opponent, Rep. Jim Jordan, on the floor. The Ohio Republican is now expected to make another run for the position.

What Dehumanization Has Wrought
This week, there was an entire news cycle about the number of decapitated babies.

Never mind that Israeli Defense Forces soldiers, the sources for these claims, are notoriously unreliable, and have intentionally misdirected or otherwise lied (the IDF media team has declined to confirm the fact, claiming that providing “proof” would be disrespectful to the deceased). But the question that I have is: Why this claim? The answer, I think, should teach us something about what we are all facing.

People are mixing verbs and adjectives, while confusing the state of a body and of acting upon that person. It doesn't help that some words like decapitated can be used as both adjective and verb depending on how they're used.

CNN has pored through hundreds of hours of media posted online attempting to corroborate accounts of atrocities committed by Hamas. In one video, which CNN determined to be authentic but has not been able to geolocate, an assailant attacks an injured man with a garden tool in an attempt to behead him. But CNN has not seen anything that would appear to confirm the claims of decapitated children.

CNN also visited the ransacked ruins of Kfar Aza on Tuesday and saw no evidence of beheaded youths. Israeli officials have not released any photographs of the incident either.
