It will sometimes re-trace 50% of the distance within the 3-candlesticks, but it's not a requirement. It's rare, but sometimes it can re-trace up to .618 of the formation. One such instance from Jan. 2002 on the SOX comes to mind. I think it re-traced up to around 660 SOX before breaking to the norm (down).
