Paul Re "21.5 Million bytes/second!"

Precisely! This is a monumental task that can only be solved
by effective compression.

Whatever happened to the fractal compression algos? My understanding
is that most compression algos are assymmetric - i.e. much more CPU horsepower needed on the compression side.

I was just wondering whether CPU speeds are now fast enough to solve
the problem using software and not dedicated hardware a la Matrox or
C-Cube (?).

Perhaps there is a beta site where one can try the latest software
compression codes?
