I think when Cirrus became a graphics-centric company, they built a significant infrastructure (not a very efficient one, it seems) which has been very hard to get rid of. It seems the company has finally completed this transition, and happily the taste is not quite that sour with the $60M graphics patent deals. I also bought in too early (early 1997) when I thought they were on the way back. I am not personally involved in the industry, but I take your suggestion as a compliment :). I simply became very interested in doing research into the company and other companies as a hobby and have enjoyed doing so. I make plenty of stupid remarks. As for the patent swap, I have no idea what patents S3 would have to offer (presumably not the Faroudja thing). Concerning set-top boxes, we can only hope. It seems Cirrus has been developing the technology (e.g. handheld appliance chipsets) for a number of years.
