As John Adams put it, "Americans are the friend of liberty everywhere, but the stewards of only their own." That appeals to me, but in Adams' day the world was not so interconnected. No, the US has neither with wisdom nor the resources to address all the world's ills. We should choose are battles wisely. IMO Saddam is worth drawing a line on. Mindful as I am of Adams' warning, I hold more with those who see a threat to liberty anywhere as being a threat to liberty everywhere!

Perhaps the best we can do today is contain Saddam in his box and deny him the ability to murder outside his own sandbox. I find that a depressing thought, but we should at least do that much. Perhaps he will be taken out by his own subjects before he dies a natural death. Clinton's policy of do nothing toward Saddam and pray he goes away has not worked. Clinton may be playing a cynical game of appeasing the Saudis by declining to support those Iraqi's who hope to establish a democracy in Iraq.

P.S. I'm an admirer of St. Exupery, but I'm truly baffled about any statements he might have made about problems between Hutus and Tutsis. I'll have to check out this Worsick on the Asia thread.
