1948 to 1976

He quit, retired early.

He had to lay off thousands of engineers when the famous billboard in Seattle said "Will the last person leaving Seattle please turn off the lights".

It hit him really hard because he had hired a lot of those folks. He started a consulting business after that.

Boeing gave up on the SST (lost gov funding) and the company bet the farm on the 747. Sales were slow until later in the 70's.

They came very, very close to bankruptcy.
