Having worked in small, high tech companies, which were trying to grow, I can think of a less worrisome reason for a principal to leave the company:

Not comfortable with mid-size company culture (entrepreneur/prima donna). Vice Presidents in mid size companies do a lot more managing and paper-work (and Marketing - Ugh!)than they do hard science. We had several "principals" leave our startup (or had them ousted by the board of directors!), which actually helped our company grow.

Or this may be the key genius who was driving the research who sees no future for the technology, and this company is truly in turmoil. If so, there will probably be other departures, perhaps high profile.

Definitely something to watch.
