I'm happy I tried the upgrade route because it was fun, but prices are now so low that it really makes a lot of sense to buy the machine retail. I just saw an ad for a PII-233 without monitor but otherwise pretty well-configured for 1299. And I'm sure you could find better prices in other areas.
