Chris: the strategy I've been employing, since I'm trying to do as much for free as possible and don't even subscribe to the WSJ, is to go the "current events analysis" page of the sec edgar site sec.gov
You can look at ALL postings for any of the last five days. I then use the search feature on my browser to hunt for 10-12 forms. This is by no means comprehensive, since I'm not sure that this is the only type of form where spin-offs are described, but it at least gets a portion of them, particularly the small ones (larger spin-offs need a proxy form, not a 10-12). Of course you also have to sift through the 10-12's that don't have anything to do with spin-offs. I think 10-12's are for registering new securities in general. Hope this helps.
