Almost went on a China tour in 2019. The price was absurdly cheap. Then I read some reviews. The tour company was clearly owned by CCP. People complained they’d be taken to government-owned shops and pressured to by overpriced goods. People who tried to opt out of the shopping trips were threatened their tour would be canceled and they’d be sent home. I went to Viet Nam and Cambodia instead and had a great time.

We kept bumping into the same ex-KGB types when we were working in Ukraine about 15 years ago. No matter how early it was in the a.m. they would be either sitting with us at breakfast or right behind us. Out for drinks in the evening and they were there always there, one had Canadian citizenship and always wanted to introduce us to prostitutes that worked at the hotel. It was plain as Jane obvious who they were and what they were doing. They distrust foreigners and stealing and spying is completely normal, and they do it under any brand or label, capitalist, Catholic, communist or Czar.
