Henry Martin Van Duesen (1850-1930) began his career in the whip industry as a whip braider at the age of 11. In 1872, Van Duesen formed his first partnership in Southfield, Massachusetts and moved his business to Westfield in 1880. He partnered with fellow whip maker John Pomeroy and worked together until 1902. Timing was not in his favor when in 1917 he built the last factory in Westfield dedicated for whip production named the H. M. Van Deusen Whip Company, In 1925 Van Deusen seeing the emerging automobile industry and realizing his business was dying converted the factory into producing lawn swings. He made his last whip in 1930 and in 1936 the company was acquired by Stanley Home Products.
