I believe I've changed my investing approach based on the size of my portfolio (and my age).

I suggest it depends on objectives - why are we in the market?

For example, if I can get 10% in a takeover in under a year with some assurance of it actually happening, I would possibly go for it.
I can do this because I've got a good-enough sized portfolio, lots of cash now, more patience than when I was younger, and I can stand a possible loss with a reasonable-size bet; my objective at my age/situation is not to shoot the lights out with any particular large bet.

When I was just starting out though -- buying into a takeover for a 10% gain or maybe 15% or more annualized, would not appeal to me. (Well, ok, there were commission charges back then too, to be considered. And no tax-deferred ira's).

I sometimes post on the takeover situations I'm getting involved with. For a person with years of investing ahead of them and a small bankroll now, there should be better situations to get involved with. Jmo, of course.
