At some point some of the electronics needs to get closer to the head.
Its simply a matter of time. The more electronics that gets closer, the more wires have to be brought as well.
Now the reason for this is simple... Noise margin. Some noise is introduced in those wires, and if they are feeding very sensitive analog circuitry (read channel) then this noise is amplified many times. Bringing the read channel as close as possible to the head reduces this effect. Eventually the read channel electronics will probably be integrated right on the head... but then there will be
a bunch of wires that will need to be run between the read channel
and the rest of the electronics. The solution will probably come as
an optical interface between the read channel electronics and the
rest of the electronics. This would give the bandwidth needed to probably do all of the communication between the read channel electronics and the rest of the electronics over a single optical
"wire". Then all the head/read channel needs is its power supplies.
How long till this happens? When its needed and if nothing better comes down the pike first. How do you like that gaze into my crystal
ball???
In the interim it will be based upon who has the best solutions, and noise margin of each solution will figure heavily into the worth.
