Alcatel announcement/Hydro-Quebec deal Reuters Story - February 16, 1998 09:57 %&64 %TEL %US %CA %ELG %FR %RESF ALA V%REUTER P%RTR (Full text of press release from Canadian Corporate News) FEBRUARY 16, 1998 Alcatel and Hydro Quebec Sign $50 Million Agreement for Fiber Optic and Digital Microwave Communications Networks MONTREAL, QUEBEC--Hydro Quebec, owner and operator of one of the largest private telecommunications networks in North America, has selected Alcatel Canada Inc. as its exclusive technology partner to meet all of its multi-gigabit fiber optic transmission, digital microwave and network management needs over the next five years. The contract, signed recently in Montreal, has an approximate value of $50 million. Alcatel, in a turnkey project, will install Alcatel 1648 SM and 1603/12 SM SONET (synchronous optical network) multiplexers, Alcatel Optinex(TM) long-haul terminal optical amplifiers, Alcatel MDR-4000 and MDR-6000 digital microwave radios (the former with high-capacity SONET interfaces), and the TMN-compliant (the telecommunications management network standard) Alcatel 1320 NM network management system for all OAM&P (operations, administration, management and provisioning) functions. Hydro Quebec's province-wide network carries critical communications necessary to control the production and distribution of electricity it produces, primarily at hydroelectric dams. Hydro Quebec will use the increased capacity created by this network expansion and modernization to meet their growing data traffic requirements between their Montreal headquarters and very distant regional centers. The network stretches north from the Canada -- U.S. border to James Bay and east to the Churchill Falls area on the Labrador coast. Hydro Quebec also is studying the use of Alcatel's submarine technology to serve areas in the far North over the next few years. The proposed use of this technology would help eliminate difficult-to-reach repeater sites in the middle of the tundra. "We developed a modernization plan to replace our aging analog microwave network with an optical ground wire network and digital radios," said Robert Benoit, Director of Telecom Infrastructure Planning for Hydro Quebec. "Alcatel met our stringent specifications on paper and in lab testing and proved willing to work with us as a true partner every step of the way." "Alcatel Canada looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Hydro Quebec," said Lou Mitrovich, Executive Vice President -Alcatel Canada Inc. "We won this contract because we offer, at competitive prices, a complete SONET product line and SONET interfaces on our radios and a network management system that can control it all."
