Lee, you really are separated from reality. My work office is right next door to a homeless shelter. I don't lock my car doors at the office. I don't even notice what's around me. The people are considerate and keep to themselves. When we have events and there is leftover food, I bring the leftovers to the shelter. I am respectful and helpful. You can live you life in fear, or you can understand and immerse yourself with those in your sphere. People are people.
