I favor monthly giving because it helps to sustain the organization.

I get that. Depends on what type of charity, though, seems to me. I assume you're talking about sustaining organizations that help the poor stay afloat.

As a general rule, I prefer solving problems to mitigating symptoms while the problems continue to albeit at slightly lower level. Better to invest in solving the problem than toss money into the money pit. The money pit is best fed for emergencies only or with assets that can't be put to better use like used clothing.

If OTOH you're talking about an educational charity, for example, scholarships, then it would be better to give early rather than late because the contribution is more of an investment and would reap greater results done early. My undergraduate degree was full scholarship and I paid it back in kind as soon as I was able.

she wrote a book entitled the Virtue of Selfishness. She said that altruism was bad.

Many people misinterpret both of those--unfortunate choice of words. By selfishness she meant enlightened self interest, not greed or narcissism. She was advocating capitalism where a zillion individual acts of self interest produce a more robust, maximized product than central planning of the economy. In that context, altruism, which means sacrificing oneself for others beyond generosity, except in rare situations, is inefficient and wasteful. Think Gift of the Magi. (That story reminds me of those pictures where some see a beautiful woman and others see a crone.d others. Some are touched and others are saddened.)

That depends on one's values.

Both generosity and efficiency are on my hierarchy of values list. One can shoot for a twofer.
